frances funk music excellence award class

This year SEMF will be hosting the Frances Funk Music Excellence Award class. Participants will all perform a piece that will be pre-selected by the donors. A prize of $300 will be awarded to the pianist who performs with the most technical skill, musicality, and creativity. The winner will be chosen by the adjudicator for Senior Piano.

The piece selected for the 2023 competition is: The Robin’s Return by Leander Fisher. Frances grew up surrounded by music. In fact, when her grandfather offered her father land, her father actually asked her grandfather for a piano instead. On that piano, Frances played this particular song to woo a certain young man. As he drove into the yard, she would throw open the window and let The Robin’s Return do its work. It worked…they were married 59 years.

Frances grew up on a farm near Niverville, Manitoba. From an early age she had already had aspirations of becoming a teacher. After graduating from high school Frances attended United College and graduated from Manitoba Teachers College with a “Grade A” Teacher’s Diploma. She also received her Royal Conservatory of Music Diploma. All through these educating years she taught piano lessons in her community beginning at 14.

In 1969 Frances founded the Portage Conservatory of Music and developed a student teacher training program to accommodate the older students who expressed a desire to teach. This program benefitted hundreds of teachers throughout the 30 years it was offered.  As Frances adjudicated, examined and conducted workshops she often encountered many of “her” former teachers. In 1999 a great honour was bestowed on her by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism for her innovative teacher training program. She was presented with the Manitoba Business Woman Entrepreneur of the Year- Lifetime Achievement Award.

Over the years Frances stretched her talents for the betterment of teachers, evaluators and the arts community from local to national levels. Frances served on many Executive Boards including 10 years as the Chairman of the Steinbach Arts Council; the President of the Associated Manitoba Arts Festivals; and many other notable organizations. In return she gained the respect of her peers, colleagues, family and friends. Frances Funk was a wonderful Ambassador for the Arts.
